Painting your plywood

“Hansel, so hot right now” or rather cactus…so hot right now. This summer it seems we have seen the fad move from succulents to cacti plants and florals and I’m not going to lie I have jumped on this bandwagon hard. I’m pretty obsessed. I absolutely adore all of the cactus prints that I have seen in Hobby Lobby and other craft stores, but I can never justify spending that money on something I could potentially make myself and for far less money.

I realize many of the fun prints in stores are on canvas, but I had a couple of 2’x2′ plywood sheets and a ton of scrap wood laying around so I decided to make my own framed art.  Naturally, with my new cactus obsession one of those boards was going to contain cacti in some shape or form!

With the exception of creating the frame all you need to do for this project is to paint your board however you desire, whether it be cactus, flamingos, or a breezy summer scape. I began my cactus art by painting the background.

For those of you wondering I used Annie Sloan Aubusson Blue chalk paint for my background. Don’t you just love this color! Annie Sloan chalk paint dries really quickly too, which is a plus. Once the paint dried I used chalk to sketch out my cactus design. Then I used acrylic paint to color in the cactus.

Seriously how easy is this project so far! I was able to freely work on this project while watching Sunday afternoon movies. Now all you have left to do is to create the frame and even that is super easy I promise.

DIY Frame

Cut List:

(2) 1×2 at 24 inches
(2) 1×2 at 25 1/2 inches

If you do not own a saw or just do not feel comfortable using a saw you can absolutely get Home Depot or Lowes to cut the wood for you when you purchase it. So…basically no excuses! Once you have your wood cut, using your nail gun, nail the 1×2 boards to your plywood. Use wood filler to fill in those nail gun holes and just like that you are done and have completed your very own framed artwork. So easy, right! I told you.
