At one point I had one of those common metal shelf units for bathroom storage. Even painted it was blah and I was over it so I decided to get rid of it. However, I got rid of it without having any idea what to use for bathroom storage, a.k.a towels and washcloths. So basically my freshly washed towels and wash cloths have just been stock piling anywhere I can find a spot in my room; mainly on top of my armoire.
A few weeks ago when I was going through my Facebook feed I finally found the perfect bathroom storage I needed on Ana White’s Facebook page. It was a ladder shelf created by Ryobi Nation she had shared. It was perfect. It had great character and would not take up a lot of space which was a must because I have a small bathroom. The best part was I would not have to drill more holes in the wall as I live in a rental. I’m not opposed to drilling holes in the wall knowing I can patch them, but I would like to avoid doing so if possible. Basically, the ladder storage shelf was perfect.
I was so excited for my weekend of projects this past weekend that I made my weekly Friday visit to Home Depot on Thursday evening and got all of my wood. Saturday I made all of my cuts and had planned to start building the ladder shelf, but I spent the majority of the day finishing up the headboard/bed project. Sunday became ladder shelf project day.
The plans were pretty easy to follow and this project can definitely be done in one day. Although, I did have a little bit of building mishap that was entirely my fault. Basically I got too cocky for my own good thinking I knew the rest of the building plans. Note to my future self and those that would like to build things: Make sure you fully read all of the instructions in detail. Kathryn was cocky. Don’t be like Kathryn. lol. If you actually follow the instructions exactly you will save yourself a lot of heartbreak that Kathryn endured. I basically did not fully read correctly that the shelves were to be attached to the actual ladder part using 1 1/4 wood screws. Instead, (because I did not read the rest of the instructions) I tried to attach the shelves using 1 1/4 nails via the nail gun. Yeah, no this does not work and your shelves will probably come apart like mine did and only once did I go back and read the actual instructions did I understand why they would not attach sturdily. Is this embarrassing? Totally, but I share in hopes that you will not be like me and actually read the instructions in full detail because even the smallest detail makes the biggest difference.
Once I figured out I was actually supposed to be attaching the shelves using 1 1/4 wood screws life became so much better and I was able to successfully finish this project.
Ana White, thank you for sharing these plans on your Facebook feed because it was just the bathroom storage I was looking for and was relatively inexpensive to build.
Building plans for the ladder shelf
Once I got past my stupidity I really am pleased on how this project turned out!
