DIY Crayon Holder

All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up

-Pablo Picasso

I believe that is so true. We are all artists in some way, whether it is on paper or some other form. I am still trying to hold dear to my inner artist. Thankfully, my precious niece helps keep me young and fun. My niece is pretty much a modern day masterpiece. She is always drawing and creating and this BAE (Best Aunt Ever) loves it! Not too long ago I made Ems a DIY crayon holder to hold her crayons. It was a hit. Nailed it! Definitely the best aunt ever.

Emaline Rocking the shades

Emaline rockin’ the shades. Way cooler than I’ll ever be and I’m totally okay with that!

I also made some more crayon holders for a craft show I participated in last year and they seem to be a popular item. I thought I may be on to something here. I know I am not the first to think of this idea and there are others that have made crayon holders before, but this DIY Crayon Holder tutorial is how I make mine.

DIY Crayon Holder

Materials

  • 3 x 3 (or you can use a 4×4)

  • Stain or paint of your choosing

  • I used a stencil I made with my silhouette machine for the holes

Tools

  • Miter Saw

  • Drill or Driver with Drill attachment

  • 3/8″ forstner bit

The great thing about this project is that it is pretty easy on the wallet and to do. I used 3×3 reclaimed wood I had in my stock pile, but you can use a 3×3 or even a 4×4 piece of lumber. I cut my crayon holder to the dimensions of 8 7/16 long and 2 3/4 deep.

I then placed my hole template I made with my silhouette machine (which is basically a stencil), but you could also use a stencil or mark your holes. Once I had attached the template I made for the holes I took my drill with the 3/8″ forstner bit and began drilling the holes for the crayons. This is really there is all to it. Pretty easy, right!

Once you are finished drilling all of the holes just sand it down to keep it smooth and then you are ready for staining or painting. Then just add whatever finishing touches you would like to make and Voila! you have made your very own DIY crayon holder.

Disclaimer: I went by my own steps in making this crayon holder and did not use anyone else’s tutorials. I always make sure I give credit where credit is due, but I did create the steps on my own even though the idea has been done many times before.
