Happy Friday everyone! Spring is officially in full bloom. Flowers, flowers, flowers everywhere. You’re going to need somewhere to arrange those beautiful flowers. Maybe you already have unused pots sitting in your garage, but they are worn out and blah looking? Maybe you found the perfect planter in shape, size, or weight at the store, but not too wild about the look? Well, I am here to say you can change the look. Find or buy functionality and I’ll guide you through the rest. You too can upscale your flower pots.
For my intended purposes I needed a flower pot that is very light weight. My flower pot is going to hold faux flowers for a decorative piece in my bedroom. More specifically, over my bed so I obviously don’t want a heavy flower pot falling on my head in the middle of the night. Definitely not the way I envision going out in this life.
Picking out just the right pot
I really wanted the clay pot look, but those were just too heavy to add to the already existing piece that will hold up the pots. The clay pots are also less expensive, but they were just too heavy.
I do not happen to have really any flower pots just hanging around so I made a trip to the motherland: Home Depot. I did find the perfect light weight pot, but it was plastic. The color was pretty, but you could definitely tell it was plastic. I wanted the clay pot look and shockingly enough the plastic was actually a little more than the clay pot. Ultimately because of the weight I went with the plastic pot, but I decided I could paint it.

Upscale Your Flower Pots
Have I mentioned before that I really wanted the clay pot look? I needed the plastic pots for its light weight so I did end up with those, but I did upscale my flower pots for my desired clay look.
To do this I used Home Decor’s chalk paint in grey from Hobby Lobby. It took a few coats, but I did end up with the desired clay pot look I was looking for. This is a project for inside and not housing real flowers so I used craft paint. If this is a pot you will use for outside purposes and actual planting you may want to use a more durable paint.
In my humble opinion it looks pretty close to a clay pot look or at least it definitely does not look plastic anymore. I’ll take that as a win! Whatever look you are going for you can upscale your flower pots with a fresh coat of paint.
Happy Weekend everyone! Now get to planting. Those flowers are not going to plant themselves!
